1969 to 2009
40 years passed since the world heard a voice for the 1st time ever from another planet.
It was Edwin Aldrin who uttered the words, “A small step of man; One giant leap for man kind. It was on 20th July 1969 when Neil Amstrong and Edwin Aldrin hopped onto the surface of moon from the module commanded by Michael Collin.
Though it was the first step on the moon the endeavors of the many people who took part in connected exercises are equally important. So much so are the great lives that turned to ashes in seconds.
They were indented only to pave the path for later exploration and expedition and succeeded. However Edwin Aldrin landed on the moon followed by Amstrong and their names will be remembered for ever.
But we remember Michael Collin who commanded the module Colombia of Apollo II machine to a lesser extend.
Altogether 12 astronauts have walked on the moon so far.
Of all astronauts we remember sunitha Williams who spent 195 days alone in a space station. Being a woman and of Indian origin she gets a special salute from all of us.
India sent chandrayan1 in 2008 to an orbit around the moon successfully. Of course the moon probe with a tri colour is on the moon.
PSLV C14 OCEANSAT-II was launched on 22-09-2009. There are four Nano Satellites weighing 1 kg each, on board. They belong to four different countries. RUBIN-VIII is also on board.
NASA has witnessed failure also. In 1967 3 Astronauts died in a full dress rehersal of Appolo1.
The tragedy in 1986 was the explosion during launch losing 7 valuable lives in one shot. The most tragic and shocking experience was of the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry to earth’s orbit –atmosphere after successfully completing all the schedules with seven people on board including Kalpana Chawla .
It was on the news when the media was not that powerfully as today the USSR had lost some manned and unmanned vehicles unnoticed by others but the name Laika the dog which rechead the destination and never returned was in the news for sometime .
During the cold war days it is admitted that there was competition inch for inch in all fields between USA & USSR . In the early days the Laurching technology of USSR was one step ahead and sent their Sputnic I Satellite into a designated orbit.
